What to Carry

Being properly prepared is an essential part of trail and ultra running. Unlike road events, you may be running through remote areas, exposed terrain, and changing weather conditions — so carrying the right kit is key for both safety and performance.

Trail Events (Recommended Kit)
For most Lancashire Trails events, runners are expected to be self-sufficient between water stations.
We strongly recommend carrying:

  • Hydration (bottle, handheld or vest)

  • Nutrition (gels, snacks, energy bars)

  • Mobile phone (fully charged)

  • Appropriate footwear (trail shoes recommended)

  • Weather-appropriate clothing (lightweight jacket if needed)

Optional but advised:

  • Small running pack or hydration vest

  • Basic first aid items (e.g. plasters)

  • Hat / sunglasses depending on conditions

👉 Even on shorter distances, being prepared will make your run more comfortable and enjoyable.

Ultra Events (Mandatory Kit)
For all ultra-distance events, runners must carry mandatory kit. This is in place for your safety and may be checked before or during the event.
Typical mandatory kit includes:

  • Waterproof jacket (with taped seams)

  • Long-sleeved base layer

  • Foil blanket / emergency blanket

  • Whistle

  • Fully charged mobile phone

  • Minimum 1 litre of hydration

👉 Failure to carry mandatory kit may result in disqualification.

Additional Recommended Kit (Ultras)
In addition to mandatory items, we strongly recommend:

  • Trail running shoes suitable for conditions

  • GPS watch or navigation device (GPX loaded)

  • Additional nutrition and electrolytes

  • Gloves / hat (depending on weather)

  • Headtorch (if low light is possible)

  • Spare layers for longer durations

Weather Considerations
Kit requirements may vary depending on conditions.

  • Additional layers may be required in cold or wet weather

  • Hot conditions may require increased hydration capacity

  • Any changes will be communicated in advance via Competitor Information

👉 Always check event updates before race day.

Why This Matters
Trail and ultra running environments can be unpredictable.
Carrying the correct kit helps you:

  • Stay safe in changing conditions

  • Handle minor issues without assistance

  • Remain self-sufficient between checkpoints

👉 This is part of the responsibility of off-road running.

Final Thoughts

  • Be prepared, not overloaded

  • Prioritise safety over speed

  • Know your kit and practise using it in training

The more prepared you are, the more confident and enjoyable your experience will be.
